Research Funding

While at OSU, I have been PI to three R21 grants and one R01 as well as MPI to an additional R01. The funding I have been awarded is:
$3,280,948 total direct costs
$1,707,223 total indirect costs
$4,988,171 total funding (direct + indirect)

I was pleased that the score of my R21 awarded at the time of my tenure track appointment received a score of 11. My R01 was scored 8 percentile and the MPI R01 was scored 2 percentile.

Pending funding includes a diversity supplement for one R01 and an additional grant from the Campbell Foundation.

Master/Graduate Advising

I am the dissertation advisor for three current BSGP graduate students. One graduate student is expected to defend her thesis in 2018.

I currently serve on the dissertation committees for two graduate students in the College of Pharmacy, Ashley Hoyte and Jason Anderson.

I have been the graduate faculty representative for two dissertation defenses (2015 and 2016).

Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Courses Taught

BSGP 7000 Concepts in Biomedical Science (2014-2016, autumn semester)

IBGP 7000 Foundational Concepts in Biomedical Science (2012-2013, autumn semester)

This course changed name and designation after 2013.

This is the first course that I participated in teaching. It is a required introductory course for all BSGP and MSTP graduate students. Since 2012 I have been the first lecturer of the course, which includes the responsibility of demonstrating a paper presentation and discussion. The students are subsequently graded on their performance for presenting and leading a discussion, constituting 25% of their final grade. For 2012 and 2013 I presented 4 lectures (8 hours total) on the topic of DNA replication and repair. Since 2014 my lectures increased to 5 lectures (10 hours total). In all years I have written and graded one exam question. SEIs and peer review letters are provided for 2012-2015.

IBGP 7240/Microbiology 7724 Molecular Pathogenesis (2013, 2014, spring semester; 2015 autumn semester)

Due to lack of enrollment this course was not offered in 2016, but is planned for 2017.

I have taught 2 lectures (2 hours total) on RNA viruses and retroviruses since 2013. The graduate elective course covers many aspects of microbiology with only a few lectures on viruses. I wrote and graded 2 exam questions in 2013, 5 exam questions in 2014, and 4 exam questions in 2015. This survey course includes the participation of 22 faculty members and I have not been included on student evaluations of instruction. However a peer review letter from 2014 is provided.

MVIMG 7741 Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis of Viruses (2013, 2014, spring semester; 2015, autumn semester)

This graduate elective course is an in depth exploration of all viruses presented by 13 faculty members. In 2013 I joined the course as a module leader (of 7 modules) focusing on retroviruses. That year I presented 3 lectures (5.5 hours total) and supervised a postdoctoral fellow who presented an additional 3 lectures (5 hours total); I also wrote 4 exam questions. In 2014 and 2015 I taught six lectures of the module (10.5 hours total) and wrote 6 exam questions. Student evaluations were collected all three years and a peer evaluation for 2013. Anticipating my increased responsibilities as course director for BSGP 7000, I withdrew from participating in this course after 2015.
