Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) Program


  1. To advance our knowledge of infectious disease through basic and applied research
  2. To promote biosafety through continuous education and training of personnel
  3. To provide state-of-the-art BSL3 facilities for OSU research and external collaborators
  4. To ensure that local and federal regulations are implemented in a manner that promotes personnel safety, research productivity, and compliance
  5. To build an integrative program that fosters communication both within and outside of OSU and the infectious diseases community
  6. To establish a culture of trust within the BSL3 research community 


The Ohio State University (OSU) is recognized as an emerging leader in infectious diseases and biodefense research. A key component of this research program is the availability of state-of-the-art Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) biocontainment facilities. OSU operates three BSL3 facilities with approximately 8600 sq ft of laboratory space. To facilitate research, BSL3 users have access to a number of shared core equipment including incubators, biosafety cabinets, fridges and freezers, centrifuges, flow cytometer, and cryostat. The BSL3 core facilities are available to all OSU researchers, as well as non-OSU researchers through collaboration or contractual projects. Oversight of the BSL3 facilities operations is provided through the Center for Microbial Interface Biology (CMIB) and includes a BSL3 Director, BSL3 Operations Manager, and two administrative personnel. The BSL3 program is committed to providing the most comprehensive support for BSL3 research. Besides maintaining the facilities at their optimum working capacity, the program provides rigorous and continuous training and education for research personnel. A strong collaborative relationship with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, which serves as one of the internal auditors of the BSL3 operations, demonstrates a commitment to ensure compliance with local and federal regulations. Communication between the BSL3 oversight committees and individual users is strongly encouraged. With this approach, the OSU BSL3 core facilities achieve an ideal balance between cutting edge scientific research and the protection of researchers and the community.
