Antimicrobial Drug Discovery Interest Group

Home > Research Activities > Antimicrobial Drug Discovery Interest Group

Despite the increasing vulnerability of human populations to infectious disease threats and the decreasing efficacy of the current antimicrobial arsenal, anti-infective drug discovery and development efforts in the pharmaceutical industry have stagnated. This is because in the case of most infections, the drug clears the microbial pathogen from the patient and is no longer needed. In general, curative therapies generate less revenue than maintenance therapies and are therefore less lucrative to the pharmaceutical industry.

The process of drug discovery and development is a daunting task. It requires the dedicated efforts of numerous professionals with expertise in a wide variety of disciplines such as basic biology, medicinal chemistry, analytical biochemistry, toxicology, and medicine. The goal of the Antimicrobial Drug Discovery Interest Group is to bring together infectious disease researchers from the Colleges of Medicine, Biological Sciences, and Veterinary Biosciences with drug discovery and development experts from the College of Pharmacy to achieve the level of coordination and oversight necessary to maximize the chance of success and sustainability in anti-infective drug development.
