Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Courses Taught

I provide teaching within my two primary fields of expertise; immunology and veterinary pathology. This is accomplished through 1) small group discussions, 2) didactic (lecture) presentation and 3) case-based learning of material depending upon the class, audience and topic. Regardless of format, One Health concepts and the clinical relevance of topics to both human and animal health are incorporated.

1. SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: I am Team Leader for VBS 7717 and PATH 8850 (Immunology Round Table). VBS 7717, Veterinary, comparative and translational immunology, is an elective course for VME I/II and graduate students. Class size is limited to less than 20 students. I direct class discussion based on reading and topic assignments to outline how immunology impacts such topics as global health, cancer, private veterinary practice, zoonotic diseases and others. PATH 8850 (Immunology Round Table), is an elective course for immunology graduate students. I develop and lead pertinent immunology discussion topics and coordinate student presentations.

2. DIDACTIC: I provide lectures (e.g. MVIMG 701, HN888, VBS 6640, MVIMG 801) with a heavy emphasis and incorporation of case-based and clinical correlates. In the 2012-2013 academic year, I developed three new lectures in the topics of 1) Vitamins and hormones: impact on immune response (in ANSCI 8888) and 2) Tumor immunology and 3) Zoonotic diseases to Ohio Dominican University students. I have prepared an entirely new set of lectures on Fungal Immunology for the newly developed course MVIMG 8010 (Advanced Topics in Immunology) for Fall 2013 and
continue to develop the Mucosal Immunology lecture (MVIMG 7010).

3. CLINICAL INSTRUCTION: I provide individualized instruction in veterinary pathology to 4th year (VME IV) students and pathology residents during Applied Veterinary Pathology (700.14), Surgical Pathology (8893.02) and Histopathology seminar (8895.04). Pedagogical instruction is either small-group or individualized one-on-one discussion with integration of basic principles with clinical correlates. I will be developing a core set of “lecture” slides for Applied Veterinary Pathology students and online international instruction modules.

Research Funding

Since beginning my faculty appointment in 2007, I have been or currently am a principle investigator on the following grants:
- 3 extramural grants (K01, R21, National Blood Foundation)
- 2 intramural grants (2 CVM Canine grants)
- Pending: I have an R01 (Impact score = 40, 32nd percentile) that is currently under revision.

I have also been or currently am a Co-investigator on 4 extramural (P01, UH2/UH3, R21, JDRF) and 1 intramural (FIC) grants.

I have also received training grant support for research projects specific to my lab for 5 veterinary students (NIH T35 grants) and 1 undergraduate student (OSU UROP grant).

Since 2007, I have submitted 16 (8 extramural and 8 intramural) grants as PI that were unfunded and been co-investigator for 9 (8 extramural, 1 intramural) unfunded grants.
