Associate Professor, Pediatrics

Biographical Narrative

My major research interest is the study of immune cell recruitment induced during inflammation and/or infection. I received my PhD. degree in Immunology from the National Polytechnic Institute in 1998 (Mexico City, Mexico), and then I moved to The Trudeau Institute, Saranac Lake, NY, where I completed an extensive and productive postdoctoral training. In 2004, I joined the Center for Microbial pathogenesis at the Research Institute Nationwide Children's Hospital and Ohio State University. Currently, I serve as a faculty member of the Integrated Biosciences Graduate Program and the Graduate Program in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. During my assistant professorship I have continued my career as a productive scientist and well-known researcher in the fields of dendritic cell immunobiology and leukocyte motility. My studies have been published extensively in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. In addition, we have filed four patent applications based in our data, three of them have been issued and one more is pending. Overall, I believe my work has made a strong impact in our immunology research area. Currently, my research program focuses on the study of the molecular mechanisms by which the immune cell chemokine receptors control directional cell migration (chemotaxis). My goal is to design chemokine-signaling antagonists as therapeutics for inflammatory or infectious disease, and ultimately, to improve human health through research.
