Biographical

I am a veterinarian with 25 years of broad background and training in immunology in both large animal and murine models, with expertise in the areas of mucosal immunology related to virus-host interaction, viral pathogenesis, and vaccine development in food animals. I received DVM and MS degrees from Veterinary College, Bangalore, India. I completed my graduate education (PhD) in 2002 at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. Subsequently, I joined Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis for my post-doctoral training in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. During five years of my training at the Indiana University, I worked on understanding the function of murine NKT cells in antiviral immune response as well as antitumor responses against murine B and T cell lymphomas.

In May 2008, I accepted a position of tenure track Assistant Professor at the Food Animal Health Research Program (FAHRP), Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, and College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, The Ohio State University, located at the Wooster campus. My position has been a 100% commitment to research in the department, and provide research training to master and graduate students, postdocs, visiting fellows and summer undergraduate students. The main focuses of my research have been in the areas of mucosal immunology related to understanding mucosal immune responses and microbial pathogenesis in the respiratory tract of pigs and other species of food animals infected with infectious and zoonotic pathogens; as well as development and evaluation of inactivated virus vaccine candidates in pigs. In April 2013, I was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at The Ohio State University.

Research Funding

Since I became an independent investigator in 2008 at FAHRP OARDC, Veterinary Preventive Medicine, The Ohio State University, I was awarded with two grants on PRRSV research from the United States Department of Agriculture under National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) to lead on multi-institutional projects with Dr. Michael Murtaugh (University of Minnesota) and the other with Dr. Ying Fang (Kansas State University). The aims of both the USDA funded research was to analyze immune mechanisms of protection in PRRSV infected and vaccinated pigs. In another USDA-NIFA grant award under dual-purpose dual-benefit grant category with Dr. Lee (OSU), a multi-PI award. The aim of the study was to analyze “Universal Flu Vaccine by a Norovirus P Particle Platform,” and my role is to understand immune correlates of protection to novel influenza virus vaccine candidates in pigs and poultry.

In addition, since 2008, I was awarded with 5 research grants from National Pork Board; 5 awards from SEEDS grants program of OARDC Ohio State; 2 awards from Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences from Ohio state; 2 awards from iCorps program of Ohio department of higher education and University of Akron related to commercialization of influenza vaccines; 2 small industry grants to improve PRRS and influenza virus vaccine formulations; 3 exploratory seed grants from the Nanovaccine Research Initiative, Iowa State University. Overall, the aims of all these research grant awards have been on diverse areas, such as understanding host-pathogen interactions, analysis of various viral and bacterial vaccine formulations; including nanotechnology-based vaccine delivery platform against influenza and PRRSV in pig model.

Notably, my laboratory discovered Natural Killer T (NKT) cell in pig and demonstrated NKT cell adjuvant effects using its agonist/ligand a-GalCer to inactivated SwIV H1N1 in intranasally vaccinated pigs. One of the future goals of my laboratory research is aimed to understand mechanisms of induction of Th1 and/or Th2 based immunity at the mucosal inductive sites of pig respiratory tract vaccinated with nasal nanoparticle-based influenza virus vaccine. As part of this goal, in a collaborative project with Dr. Prosper Boyaka, Veterinary Biosciences, Ohio State, we applied a NIH R01 grant application (under review). Aim of that proposal was to elucidate the mechanisms of induction of innate and adaptive immunity to a nasal nanoparticle-based influenza vaccine coadministered with the NKT cell adjuvant in SPF pig and mice model. In another area of research, an exploratory research project application was submitted to NIH R21 program with Dr. Piermarini, Department of Entomology, The Ohio State University. In that application, we proposed to determine Zika virus pathogenesis in a pig model, through understanding its perinatal transmission in baby piglets and fetal brain transmission from infected pregnant sows.
