Biographical

I am a molecular virologist studying HIV interactions with host factors. My long-term research goal is to define the mechanisms regulating HIV infection in myeloid-lineage cells and to better understand viral pathogenesis. I have been studying HIV interactions with host factors since 2000. During the last nine years of my independent HIV research, I have focused on the molecular mechanisms of dendritic cell-mediated HIV transmission and HIV restriction in human myeloid cells. I have established a productive research record in this area. Our studies on HIV interactions with dendritic cells and monocytes have provided new insights into HIV transmission and AIDS pathogenesis.

I joined the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at The Ohio State University (OSU) as a tenured Associate Professor on October 1, 2009. I was promoted to Professor in July 2014. My appointment is approximately 80% on research and 20% on teaching and service. My current research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of HIV restriction in human myeloid cells. These studies can facilitate our understanding of HIV pathogenesis and the development of more effective interventions against HIV infection.

My research contributions have been recognized in the field of HIV basic studies. I have been an invited speaker at many national and international conferences and seminars, and served as a regular member of a study section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an invited grant reviewer for international/national foundations. I have maintained significant NIH funding since 2006. As a principal investigator (PI), I have obtained five NIH research awards (two R01 grants and four R21 grants) and four foundation grants to continuously support HIV basic research in my lab since 2006. A new NIH R01 grant in which I serve as a co-investigator has been funded in September 1, 2014.

Since I established my lab at OSU in 2009, I have served as an advisor for 7 postdoctoral researchers, 5 graduate students, and 2 undergraduate students in my lab. I also served as a member of Ph.D. thesis committees for 8 students (7 at OSU). I have taught 8 graduate courses of virology at OSU since 2009. Faculty, course directors, and students have positively evaluated my teaching. I also served as a virology course director since 2013. Furthermore, I have contributed to the virology research community by constantly serving as a grant reviewer, journal editorial board member, and journal editor.

Sirena Coon, MS. 06/2010 – 08/2012 (graduated with a MS), has been awarded the 2012 Distinguished Graduate Publication Award (the 2nd place), Department of Veterinary Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, OSU.

Postdoctoral / Researcher Advising

My goal of mentoring postdoctoral fellows is to facilitate trainees’ career development through innovative and productive research training and to establish a long-term working relationship with the trainees.

Since I became a faculty member in 2005, I have successfully mentored 9 postdoctoral fellows, including 6 fellows at OSU (3 currently in my lab). Three previous postdoctoral researchers trained in my lab (Drs. C. Dong, N. Raghavendra, and J. Wang) have obtained independent faculty positions in leading research institutions in China and India. They have their independent research labs in academic institutions and maintain active research collaborations with me. Other three postdoctoral researchers trained in my lab have become senior research scientists in academic institutions in the US.

The following list only includes the postdoctoral researchers in my lab at OSU since 2009. Two postdoctoral researchers currently in my lab have received travel awards supporting their attendance of national meeting.

* Suresh de Silva, Ph.D., won the First Place of Travel Award for Short Talk Presentation at the Research Retreat of the Center for Microbial Interface Biology, OSU, 04/2013.

* Corine St. Gelais, Ph.D., received a travel award from the OSU Public Health Preparedness for Infectious Diseases Program for her oral presentation at Retrovirus meeting, New York, 05/2013.

Master/Graduate Advising

My goal for mentoring graduate students is to guide and facilitate their research training through innovative and independent projects. Since 2005, I have actively contributed to mentoring graduate students and I have served as an advisor for three MS students graduated from my lab. Currently, I am mentoring three PhD students in my lab. A few students have obtained research fellowships or publication awards during their training in my lab.

Since 2009 at OSU, I have served as a dissertation committee member for 8 PhD students and two of them have graduated. I have also served as a research advisor for 15 PhD students’ rotations in my lab from 2010 to 2014. Moreover, I have mentored one DVM professional student and two undergraduate students for their summer research training in my lab in 2012-2014.

Continuing Education, Extension, and Other Courses Taught

As a visiting professor, I have given a guest lecture on HIV research as a part of the Virology course for graduate students at the Soochow University in China in 2011.

Creative Works

Since 2013, I have submitted three invention reports as the first inventor to the OSU Office of Technology Commercialization and Knowledge Transfer. These inventions are in the process of patent applications. Please refer to details in the following item g).

Published Works

I only list abstracts that were published since I joined OSU in 2009. My lab has published a total of 35 conference abstracts since I become an independent HIV researcher in 2005.

Research Funding

1. Significant and sustained extramural funding since 2006:

As a Principal Investigator (PI), I have been awarded five NIH grants (two R01 and three R21 grants), including two R21 grants in 2012 and one R01 grant in 2013 at OSU. I have transferred an R01 grant and an R21 grant from my previous institution when I moved to OSU in 2009. The total funding of these five NIH grant (both direct and indirect costs) is approximately $4.3 million. I have a pending NCI R21 grant (scored 2%) as a PI, which will be funded in July 2014.

Since I joined OSU on October 1, 2009, as of May 30, 2014, the total awards of my five NIH grants to OSU are $2,067,662, including $1,354,296 direct costs and $713,366 indirect costs. Of note, all of these five grants have 100% allocation of expenditure to the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Additionally, I have been awarded four foundation grants as a PI and the total direct cost of these four grants is around $255,770. I have also been awarded two foundation grants as a Co-Investigator. A pending NIH R01 grant (18%) as co-investigator may be funded through the selective pay in July 2014.

2. Exceptional efforts in grant submissions at OSU since 2009:

Since October 1, 2009, I have submitted a total of 51 research proposals, including 44 as a PI and 7 as a co-investigator to different funding agencies (the NIH, Research Foundations, and over ten OSU intramural programs). I have also served as a mentor for 5 postdoctoral fellowship applications (3 NIH career development grants and 3 foundation fellowship applications) as well as 5 pre-doctoral fellowship applications (National Science Foundation, C. Glenn Barber Fund, HHMI Med into Grad Scholar Program, and NIH T32 training grants) from my lab trainees. Moreover, since 2010, I have participated in five OSU applications for NIH training grants as a faculty mentor (four T32 grants and one T35 grant).

Academic Advising

In addition to the above and below listed activities of my academic advising at OSU, I have served as a research mentor for the Individual Studies (Course 693, 10 credit hours per quarter or semester) of 4 graduate students in my lab since 2010.

Since 2009, I have been serving as a faculty participant for the Research Seminar course (VBS 850). I have provided constructive feedback on research and presentation skills to graduate students and judged presentations for the departmental awards.
