Biographical

Larry S. Schlesinger, MD, Samuel Saslaw Professor of Medicine is Chair of the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity, and Director of the Center for Microbial Interface Biology. He also directs the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD). He has joint appointments in the College of Public Health and Departments of Microbiology, Veterinary Biosciences, and Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics. Dr. Schlesinger was recruited to OSU from the University of Iowa in 2002. His laboratory is focused on human mononuclear phagocyte interactions with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and more recently Francisella tularensis. Current work in the lab is focused on the role of mycobacterial cell wall lipoglycans produced in vitro and in vivo (including glycomics and lipidomics) in regulating the host inflammatory response (e.g. macrophage NODs, PPARγ), the role of core enzymes in generating mycobacterial GDP-mannose for the production of cell wall lipoglycans (bacterial knock-out and over-expression systems), pulmonary models of the innate immune response to mycobacteria (role of surfactant proteins), and identifying host susceptibility factors for tuberculosis by using functional genomics.
