Current OSU Appointment

Associate Professor, Microbiology Admin

Advising Narrative

Emily Chen was awarded an Undergraduate Research Scholarship Award in 2010.
Rachael Billock was awarded an OSU SOLAR award in 2012.
Brylan May received an NIH-diversity supplement award (R01AI084110-03S1).
Vishnu Gudimetla earned a middle author, peer-reviewed publication.

Noteworthy Graduate Narrative

My first graduate student, Surender Kumar, published two first and two middle author peer-reviewed manuscripts. He received the OSU PHPID graduate student fellowship. He was selected to give an oral presentation at the Cold Spring Harbor Retrovirus Conference and had two poster presentations at the Conference of Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. These are both international meetings. He did a postdoctoral fellow at the NIH (studying HIV immunology).

My second graduate student, Jessica Mates, has just published a first author manuscript and currently has one first author and one middle author publication in preparation. She presented her research as a poster at the Cold Spring Harbor Retrovirus Conference. She is scheduled to defend her dissertation in March 2014. She received first place for her poster at the OSU CMIB Research Retreat in 2013.

Academic Advising

Since I joined OSU in 2007, I have mentored two high school students, twelve undergraduate students, two graduate students, three medical students (each supported with an internal OSU fellowship [Roessler Fellowships]), two post doctoral fellows (both with PhDs in Virology), and two medical fellows. I have also served on the undergraduate honors thesis committee for six OSU students and on the PhD Advisory committee for 13 graduate students.

Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Courses Taught

I currently teach an average of 27 lectures per year, including one-half of the OSU undergraduate immunology class (Micro 5122), and several lectures to OSU graduate students on retrovirus biology. I am course director for Biomedical Sciences class 4810H: Select Topics in Microbiology & Immunology and co-course director for Microbiology 5122: Immunology. I have completely redone the 4810H syllabus, which now includes a service learning component (see curriculum narrative and Appendix 1). The students' service learning projects are being conducted in both Columbus and Malawi.

Biographical

I joined the faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, without tenure, in 2007 and I transferred my TIU to the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity in 2011. I have a joint, 30% salaried appointment in the Department of Microbiology in the OSU College of Arts and Sciences.
