On Tuesday, June 14, 2016, Dr. Joanne Turner, a professor in the Department of Microbial Infection & Immunity (MI&I), was awarded the 2016 FAME Distinguished Mentor Award by The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Drs. Amal Amer, Jesse Kwiek, Murugesan Rajaram, and Jacob Yount, nominated her for the award, citing that she “works tirelessly to enhance the career progression of her colleagues.” In their letter of nomination, they also noted that Dr. Turner “strives to optimize the workplace to be welcoming to women and individuals of diverse backgrounds.” In a supporting letter, Dr. Larry Schlesinger, Chair of MI&I, wrote, “Dr. Turner is an outstanding and highly accomplished scientist, teacher, and mentor who is having a significant impact on trainees.” The award was presented to Dr. Turner at a recent faculty meeting by leadership of the OSU College of Medicine and FAME including, Drs. Philip Binkley, Robert Bornstein, and Chris Ellison. All of her colleagues in MI&I would like to congratulate Dr. Joanne Turner on this well-deserved honor.
