Areas of Interest Lung Inflammation and Remodeling Lung Epithelial Cell Biology
My laboratory investigates lung epithelial cell behavior during normal cell function, wound remodeling, and disease pathogenesis. The majority of our investigation begins with primary human lung cell culture models exposed to conditions that simulate inflammatory stress. We then focus on the identification of key biochemical events (drug targets) that promote inappropriate lung cell function in order to apply our discoveries to better understanding patient disease predisposition and develop innovative therapeutic strategies to prevent lung disease.
Biography Daren Knoell, PharmD, is an associate professor in the College of Pharmacy. He also holds joint appointments as a member of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Center for Microbial Interface Biology, Center of Excellence in Pharmacogenomics, and Director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Reseach Institute Lung Cell Isolation Program. Dr. Knoell's research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and focuses on understanding primary innate and adaptive responses of the human lung epithelium to inflammatory stimuli. The foundation for this work is to reveal biological targets within this critical barrier that may lead to new therapeutic strategies to prevent lung disease. Two examples of his work include cytokine/growth factor regulation of programmed cell death and HIV-induced emphysema pathogenesis. His clinical interests focus on providing interdisciplinary health care to adults with chronic lung disease.
Dr. Knoell has received recognition for his scholarship and service in pulmonary medicine. He was a recipient of the Merck & Co Award for Outstanding Achievement in Pulmonary Biology 2004 as well as a recipient of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Career Development Award 2004. He was honored as a "Fellow" in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, serves as a member of the American Lung Association of Ohio Board of Directors, and has recently been appointed as a member of the National Institutes of Health Asthma Clinical Research Network II (ACRNII) Expert Review Panel. He received his doctorate degree in pharmacy from the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy followed by completion of a clinical residency at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Knoell then completed a research fellowship at UCSF in the laboratory of Dr. Francis Szoka before coming to The Ohio State University.
