Burkhard, Mary Jo
Mary Jo Burkhard, DVM, PhD, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Clinical Pathology), is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences. She joined the Ohio State University in 2004. Dr. Burkhard's research focuses on the mucosal transmission and immunopathogenesis of lentiviruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Her current studies are directed towards understanding the mucosal immunopathogenesis of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection. FIV is closely related to HIV and can be used to understand the mechanisms of lentiviral transmission as well as evaluate intervention strategies. Specific areas of focus are (1) the role of cell-associated versus cell-free virus, (2) loss of mucosal immune effector cells during infection, and (3) what immune responses are important to induce by vaccination.
